Building Control Surveyor

Job Details

Brent Council are looking for an Building Control Surveyor to take  responsibility for all matters relating to the Building Regulations, The Building Act and delivering on targets for a shared area within the borough including Major Projects and cross boundary working.

  1. To maintain RBI Status by renewing the Class 2 Register Building Inspector registration every 4 years
  2. To operate as a Class 2 Registered Building Inspector, up to and including Category E, on behalf of the Council.
  3. Comply with the Code of Conduct for Registered Building Inspectors from The Building Safety Regulator.
  4. Take full responsibility to the BSR for the supervision and signing off work of staff members on projects that they are not regisitered to work on and within your class and category, as required.Take reasonable care for the safety and health of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts; and to work with management to comply with Service/Unit procedures and protocols and with Brent Council’s Health and Safety Policy and all guidance, instructions and risk assessments
  5. Understand the value of information to the council and to contribute to good information governance by keeping information safe, accurate and up to date and available to those who need it. Abide by the council’s information governance policies.
  6. Work with the Senior Building Control Manager and Building Control Manager, providing high level support / assistance including work planning, management and decision making processes within the Building Control service to ensure the delivery of high quality, cost effective, customer focussed services and to ensure corporate and service objectives are achieved.
  7. Provide expert professional assessments, using their professional judgement, experience, analytical, decision making and interpersonal skills to provide an effective service in respect of Building Control matters including plan examination, inspection and determination of standard and complex Building Regulation applications in connection with Area Surveying, Major Projects and Partnering work. This includes verification, approval and certification of new, innovative and unique designs / methods of construction to ensure a safe and sustainable built environment in compliance with the Building Act, Building Regulations and allied legislation which can have life safety and financial implications.
  8. Provide direction on building control processes and procedures,  attendance at multidisciplinary design team meetings and inspections (which may be outside of the Borough).  The post-holder will be required to safeguard the interests  of the Council at all times.
  9. Promote the Building Control service to clients and key customers including contractors, agents and residents at all times. The post-holder must be able to operate in a context of competition with the private sector for the provision of services and be able to secure and maintain significant levels of work relating to development projects for the service to improve market share and maximise income.
  10. Liaison, whether in writing, telephone, or face to face contact with members of the public, other Council Employees, representatives of other statutory bodies, architects or developers / contractors.
  11. Consultation with external agencies will be required. The post holder(s) will also be expected to have a good working knowledge of general structural matters and provide direction, signposting, and enforcement of Building Regulation issues.
  12. Undertake investigation and respond to customer enquiries, complaints, legal matters, mediation and Court action, as required, together with general Building Control enquiries / workload
