Job Purpose
Inspection of commercial businesses to ensure compliance with relevant food hygiene legislation, health and safety/public health where competent.
An accredited Environmental Health Diploma, Environmental Health Degree BSc or MSc or equivalent or hold a Higher Certificate in Food Control which includes the practical food identification exam. An advanced Professional Certificate in Food Hygiene and Standards Control which includes the practical food examination exam. You must be Be registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) or the Professional Register with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
You will be required to have previously worked for local authorities. Experience in carrying out routine statutory food hygiene inspections. Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills enabling the post holder to effectively communicate with a large range of audiences and must be able to use initiative and deal with a varying standard of compliance in food businesses.
The role will require carrying out unrated, i.e., newly registered food businesses but also to inspect category C and D rated food businesses and follow up re-visits/re-ratings/ closures, enforcement action and some food complaints. Category A and B inspections (high risk) that consultants have had previous involvement in.
Directly Responsible To:
Operations Manager – Commercial Team and Principal Environmental Health Officer
Main Areas of Responsibility:
Where competent to do so:
• Undertake routine inspections and visits to enforce relevant food hygiene, health and safety and public health legislation in a wide range of commercial businesses.
• Investigate food poisoning cases/outbreaks and infectious disease
• Carry out accident investigations, including serious and fatal incidents
• Respond to service requests/complaints, including commercial waste and drainage.
• Enforce the skin piercing Bylaws
• Prepare inspection reports, warning letters, statutory notices, prosecution case files, obtain witness statements, and any other correspondence required during the investigation in accordance Police and Criminal Evidence Act and the City Councils Enforcement Policy.
• Attend meetings, Magistrates/Crown Court, Coroners Court, tribunals and committees, as required
• This role will involve accompanying other officers, including newly qualified officers on visits and providing assistance, as required
• Provide specialist/technical advice to other service areas
• Provide information and assist and support the Operations Manager, Principal
Officer and Commercial team including the provision of information for Have
Your Say Requests and requests made under the Freedom of Information Act.
• Attend training courses to maintain your continued professional development and competence, as required, by the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Food Standard Agency’s Food Law Code of Practice and Competency Framework.

• You will be required to visit certain types of commercial businesses which may involve some degree of physical activity and work in adverse conditions.

Essential

• A good understanding of food safety and or health and safety and or public health legislation (A/I)
Desirable
• Ability to undertake complex and demanding investigations
Skills/Abilities
