Haringey council
Advert – Principal Accountant, Housing & Chief Accountant’s Team
The Role
We have a Principal Accountant role in the Housing & Chief Accountant’s Team at the London Borough of Haringey which we are recruiting to. This post is key to supporting the Chief Accountant and Deputy Chief Accountant in maintaining the integrity of the Council’s accounts and producing the Statement of Accounts each year.
The Principal Accountant has a high degree of responsibility and autonomy for how they approach the workload in their areas: including the design and preparation of working papers and managing audit queries within their areas. The Principal Accountant works closely with the Chief Accountant and Deputy Chief Accountant to ensure that the Council’s financial reporting processes, procedures and policies are pragmatic, fit for purpose, up to date with best practice, and deliver maximum value to the Council.
This role is the lead on collection fund and revenue accounting including the completion of notes to the council’s statutory accounts, group accounts, cash flow statement and statistical returns.
It is role is expected to last for at least 6 months (and possibly beyond) depending on how quickly we can recruit to a permanent role) as we’d need to cover the 2024/25 year-end Closure and external audit.
The coverage and exposure to different areas of the Council’s financial reporting makes this role a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional individual who wants to further their career and has aspirations to be a future Head of Finance or Chief Accountant. With all this in mind, we think this is an excellent opportunity, and would welcome your application.
About You
You will be a technical expert who enjoys, and has a flair for, financial accounting. You will be a natural problem solver, with excellent excel skills, and a desire to constantly strive for improvements in all areas of work. This role involves line managing and supervising other members of the Chief Accountant’s Team, so we are also looking for an individual who enjoys team building and helping more junior staff achieve their goals and develop their skills. Prospective applicants should be qualified or actively studying for CCAB qualifications.
