Job Details

Purpose of the role:
  • To deliver on targets to procure properties for the council to use for rough sleepers and homelessness prevention.
  • To work in partnership with the Street Population Outreach Team and Outreach Navigators to ensure that customers are rehoused in suitable and affordable private rented sector accommodation.
  • To provide rapid intensive support, advice and assistance to single people at imminent risk of a first night sleeping rough.
  • To establish links with property providers nationally in order to maximise opportunities for the procurement of properties for Southwark’s rough sleepers
  • To work with the Private Rented Sector and Financial Inclusion Teams to ensure Rough Sleepers and single people at imminent risk of a first night sleeping rough understand their rights and responsibilities along with possible benefits that are available to this cohort.
  • This is a specialist role that will be at the forefront of the prevention of homelessness, and at the cutting edge of the Homelessness Act 2017.
  • Undertake detailed casework with customers screened for a supported lettings service. This includes an assessment of needs, offer of mediation with hosts with the aim to prevent homelessness, housing options advice, facilitating access to private rented and supported accommodation, support to apply for benefits and referrals to learning and work opportunities.
  • Maintain own active caseload and monitor cases where other agencies are providing services.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain and create new working relationships with private sector suppliers including estate and lettings agents to procure private rented sector properties for a Rough sleepers or customers threatened with rough sleeping
  • Will contribute to the development of policies and services for single clients at risk of rough sleeping, participating in pilot projects, working groups and other meetings as required
  • Provide clear information to clients on the under 35 shared accommodation local housing allowance rates and any exemptions where applicable for 25-34 year olds including evidence required for this exemption.
  • Promote and sell Council schemes by organising and co-ordinating regular publicity events, including the Landlords Forum. Producing leaflets, mail shots and any other appropriate information.
  • Advise individual landlords on all available options for letting their properties via the Council. Promote the benefits of working with the Council with landlords and private sector suppliers.
