About the role
- You will assist children, parents and any vulnerable people to cross the road on the journey to and from a designated school in Camden.
- You will work every school day during term time, typically 8.15-9.10pm and 3.15-4.10pm.
- You will identify and efficiently manage variable traffic conditions and obstructions to ensure safe passage to and from school, as well as report on localised highways issues that might affect residents as well as the comfort and safety of people journeying to and from school.
- You will operate within the legislation prescribed for a School Crossing Patrol Officer.
- You will be prepared to work at a location chosen by Camden to be of greatest need of a SCPO present, which will be reviewed (and if necessary, changed) on a two-yearly basis.
- You will be prepared to work at another designated school crossing patrol point temporarily (with one weeks’ notice), to maintain the service at locations of greatest need.
- The role will provide you with the opportunity to contribute to the Council’s knowledge about the local area and provide ideas for improvement to continually increase pedestrian safety and road safety more generally, in the borough.
- The postholder may be required to undertake other relevant duties as required by the line manager that are commensurate with the grade/role.

- You will have a strong commitment to carrying out the duties of a School Crossing Patrol Officer, and pride yourself on being reliable in carrying out the role.
- You will be resourceful in managing variable traffic conditions, and resolute in carrying out the duties of the job when encountering a wide variety of road users in the area.
- You will carry out your duties with care for the children and due regard for other road users, providing the school community with a reassuring presence on the road.
- You will be flexible in providing emergency cover for another designated school crossing patrol location.
- You will understand and be proud to play your part in helping to improve road safety within our communities among those travelling on foot.
- You will have the ability and fitness to be able to work on your feet for an hour twice a day and in all weather conditions, with the protective clothing provided.
Work Environment
The role will be working outside at busy periods of the day and will be dealing with a high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Technical Knowledge and Experience
- You will demonstrate competency in communicating with young children, parents and school staff and maintain an approachable, friendly demeanour to the children.
- You will have excellent time keeping skills, and experience in following procedures.
- You will demonstrate the ability to stay calm when faced with difficult people or behaviour, and the desire to report the details of any problems encountered.
- You will have a good understanding of the road rules applying to school crossing patrol work, and a reasonable understanding of the wider context of the highway code.
