Role Overview
A SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Casework Officer works to support children and young people with SEND, their families, and the schools/settings they attend. They ensure that the process of assessing needs, planning support, and reviewing progress follows legal requirements and best practices.
In short: they coordinate SEND support, statutory assessments, and multi-agency collaboration to make sure children get the right education and support.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Supporting Schools and Settings
- Help schools apply the graduated approach (assess, plan, do, review) to meet pupils’ SEND needs.
- Advise and support SENCos (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) and headteachers.
Statutory Assessment & EHC Plans
- Lead the statutory assessment process for children and young people with SEND.
- Manage Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans from assessment through to placement and review.
- Ensure all statutory deadlines are met.
Monitoring & Reviewing Progress
- Review pupil outcomes and monitor progress against targets.
- Attend annual reviews, especially for vulnerable pupils (e.g., Looked After Children, pupils at risk of exclusion).
Multi-Agency Collaboration
- Work with internal teams like SENISS, Occupational Therapy, and Educational Psychology.
- Liaise with external services including Children’s and Adult Social Care and Health.
- Ensure a joined-up, multi-agency approach to identifying and meeting SEND needs.
Family and Pupil Engagement
- Keep children, young people, and parents/carers at the center of planning and decision-making.
- Support families through the assessment and planning processes.
Promoting Local Provision
- Aim to support children in maintained settings within Liverpool wherever possible.
Person Specification / Skills Needed
Experience working in education or children’s services, ideally in SEND casework.
Strong knowledge of Children and Families Act 2014 and SENDIST regulations.
Experience facilitating meetings and multi-agency collaboration.
Comfortable working with parents, carers, and vulnerable children.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
High proficiency in IT, especially Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Able to work independently and as part of a team.
Job Details
Pay: £40/hour (limited company or umbrella status)
Immediate start
Minimum 2 days per week on site
