Senior Planning officer (AR)

Job Details

Role Purpose:

To manage a workload of planning and related applications, present applications to Planning Committee, defend the Council’s decisions on appeal, provide professional advice on pre-application proposals, and to give general planning advice to members of the public.

As a Senior Planning Officer you will also be responsible for larger and more complex applications, supervision of planning technicians and/or junior planning officers, and deputising where required for team manager.

Specific Duties:

1. Provide pre-application advice on development proposals, in accordance with national planning guidance and development plan policies.

2. Manage a workload of applications, including consultation, amendment, preparation of report and recommendation to service quality standards and time scales.

3. Prepare and present Council’s case on appeals on planning and related matters to meet Planning Inspectorate standards and timescales

4. Respond to general queries on planning and related matters within team from all media including telephone, letter, email and personal contacts to achieve service quality standards and time scales

5. Maintain and update records to service quality standards and timescales

6. Present professional advice at Planning Committee meetings, and other Council meetings or stakeholder meetings as required

7. Liaison with other service and corporate teams in support of delivery of high quality development management service.

8. Promote a good working relationship with councillors.

9. Participate in team and service group meetings, and assist in implementing service improvements

10. Manage a more complex caseload of pre-application enquiries and applications.

11. Supervise planning technician and/or junior planning officers in a team, including coaching, mentoring, monitoring and appraising team members.

12. Deputise as required for team manager.
