Job Title: Benefits Officer
Purpose of the Role
To support residents in paying their rent and council tax by assessing benefit claims, providing accurate advice, and administering financial support in line with legislation and council policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and process claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction accurately and within deadlines
- Provide clear, tailored advice to residents on benefit entitlement and financial support
- Review and update claims when circumstances change
- Investigate and resolve queries related to benefit claims
- Administer discretionary support such as Discretionary Housing Payments and hardship funds
- Identify and refer potential fraud or irregularities
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with data protection and safeguarding standards
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies (e.g. DWP, housing, support services)
- Contribute to service improvements and performance targets
Skills and Experience
- Experience assessing Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction claims
- Strong understanding of relevant legislation and procedures
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to explain complex information clearly
- Good attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
