Job Description: Children’s Social Worker (Safeguarding / Children & Families)

Job Purpose

To work as a qualified Children’s Social Worker within a frontline statutory safeguarding service, supporting children, young people, and their families to achieve safe, stable, and positive outcomes.

The role focuses on assessing risk, protecting children from harm, and providing targeted interventions that strengthen family capacity and improve long-term wellbeing.


Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake statutory assessments of children and families where concerns about safety or welfare have been raised
  • Manage a caseload of children in need, child protection, and potentially looked after children cases
  • Carry out home visits and direct work with children, young people, and families
  • Identify levels of risk and make informed safeguarding decisions in line with legislation and policy
  • Develop, implement, and review child protection and support plans
  • Work collaboratively with multi-agency partners including schools, health professionals, police, and voluntary services
  • Attend and contribute to case conferences, core groups, and strategy meetings
  • Prepare clear, accurate written records, reports, and court documentation when required
  • Contribute to court proceedings where necessary, including giving evidence
  • Ensure all practice is child-centred, strength-based, and outcome focused
  • Promote education, wellbeing, and positive long-term outcomes for children and young people

Service Context

This is a frontline statutory role within Children’s Social Care. The service is undergoing development and investment, with a focus on improving practice quality, reducing caseload pressure, and strengthening leadership and support for staff.

You will be part of a service that aims to deliver consistent, high-quality safeguarding practice while supporting families to make sustainable change.


Working Arrangements

  • Flexible working available (including part-time, reduced hours, and condensed working patterns)
  • Hybrid working model with expectation to attend base 2–3 days per week
  • Based within Knowsley Council Children’s Services
  • Manageable caseload approach supported by supervision and team management

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England Social Work England
  • Experience or strong interest in children’s safeguarding or family social work
  • Ability to build effective relationships with children, families, and professionals
  • Strong communication, assessment, and analytical skills
  • Ability to make sound professional judgements under pressure
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Willingness to engage in continuous professional development
