Class 2 Waste & Cleansing Driver

Job Purpose

To safely and efficiently operate Council waste and cleansing vehicles while supporting the delivery of high-quality waste collection and cleansing services. The postholder will also lead a small crew, ensuring daily routes are completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate Class 2 HGV vehicles safely and responsibly on daily waste and cleansing routes.
  • Complete thorough vehicle safety and roadworthiness checks before and during shifts, reporting any defects or maintenance issues.
  • Lead and support a small operational crew, providing clear instructions and monitoring performance throughout the working day.
  • Ensure waste and cleansing activities are completed efficiently, safely and in line with agreed routes and service standards.
  • Use in-cab systems and software to record service delivery, incidents and relevant route information.
  • Follow all Health & Safety, manual handling and road safety procedures.
  • Work safely in busy traffic and public environments, maintaining awareness of pedestrians, other road users and colleagues.
  • Communicate professionally with colleagues, supervisors and members of the public.
  • Report operational issues, incidents, hazards or service problems promptly.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety and customer service while representing the Council positively.
  • Work flexibly, including early mornings, evenings and weekends, and in all weather conditions.
  • Undertake physical duties associated with waste and cleansing operations as required.

Essential Requirements

  • Valid Category C (HGV Class 2) driving licence.
  • Valid Driver Qualification Card (CPC).
  • Previous experience driving HGVs, ideally within waste, refuse or cleansing services.
  • Experience carrying out vehicle safety checks and ensuring vehicles are legally roadworthy.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety and road safety procedures.
  • Ability to lead a small crew and provide clear instructions.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to use in-cab technology and software to record operational information.
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including early starts, evenings and weekends.

PPE

Full PPE is required, including:

  • Orange H-Vis trousers
  • Orange H-Vis T-shirt
  • Orange H-Vis jumper
  • Orange H-Vis coat
  • Orange H-Vis waterproofs for wet weather

Boots and gloves will be provided by the client.
