Revenues Officer – Council Tax & Business Rates

Location: Station Road, London, Greater London, N22 7TY, United Kingdom – Only in office once a month
Contract Type: Temporary Contract (3–6 months minimum)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week
Rate: £21 per hour+ (negotiable for exceptional candidates based on experience)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Revenues Officer to join a local authority Revenues team, responsible for the accurate administration of Council Tax, Business Rates and BID Levy accounts.

The successful candidate will provide an efficient, customer-focused service while ensuring accounts are managed in line with legislation, council policies and procedures. The role requires strong attention to detail, financial accuracy and the ability to provide advice and support to residents, businesses and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer Council Tax, Business Rates and BID Levy accounts accurately and efficiently.
  • Assess and process liability, discounts, exemptions, reliefs and account amendments in line with legislation and council policies.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure customer accounts are kept up to date.
  • Provide advice and guidance to residents, businesses and stakeholders regarding revenues queries.
  • Investigate and resolve account discrepancies, disputes and customer enquiries professionally.
  • Support recovery and enforcement processes, including issuing recovery notices, reviewing outstanding accounts and assisting with court-related work where required.
  • Process refunds, adjustments and account reviews accurately.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve complex queries.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Experience working within a Council Tax, Business Rates, Revenues or Local Authority environment.
  • Experience administering financial accounts and processing customer records accurately.
  • Knowledge and understanding of revenues legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Experience assessing liability, discounts, exemptions and reliefs.
  • Strong customer service skills with experience handling complex queries.
  • Ability to interpret policies and legislation and apply them correctly.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience within a local authority Revenues team.
  • Experience using revenues systems such as Civica, Academy, Northgate or similar.
  • Experience supporting recovery, enforcement or court processes.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be an experienced Revenues professional with a strong understanding of Council Tax and Business Rates administration. They will be confident managing customer accounts, interpreting legislation and delivering a high-quality service within a busy local authority environment.
