Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary

Working unsupervised or as part of a team, and in all weathers, the postholder will be mainly
engaged in work in the Council’s Building Maintenance division but in general terms will be
required to carry out the following duties at play areas/amenity areas/cemeteries and other
sites as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Driving Duties
1.1 Drive and be responsible for allocated vehicles. Duties will include: vehicle checks,
required routine maintenance (eg oil and water checks) and cleaning; transport goods,

2. Labouring Duties
2.1 Undertake work in public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas and similar open spaces,
i.e. general maintenance of these areas, eg grass cutting, hedge trimming, clearing leaves
and litter; constructional labouring work: erection and dismantling of sports and other
equipment; clearing eg public buildings such as changing rooms and toilets. Maintenance
of fencing eg concrete posts and chain link wire.
2.2 Responsible for reading plans, evaluating jobs, selecting materials and completing tasks to
timescales.
2.3 In addition to the usual range of tools and equipment, use powered hand tools and light
plant, including the operation of tractor-mounted equipment could be required.
2.4 Erection and maintenance of fencing eg concrete post and chainlink; site mixing and
placing of concrete and mortar; flagging; kerbing; laying bitmac; pipe laying (sewers and
drains); maintenance of sewers and drains; maintenance and repair of guttering.
2.5 Maintenance of roofs, including the repair of tile, slate, asphalt and built-up felt roofs.
2.6 Erection and dismantling of scaffolding (mobile tower and tubular scaffolding).
2.7 Attending tradesmen, i.e. Joiners, Electricians or Bricklayers.
2.8 Responsible for the general safety on site of work colleagues and members of the public;
working to safe practices while working at heights; using elevated platforms; and wearing
of Personal Protective Equipment.

3 Cemetery duties
3.1 Mark out and supervise the opening and closing of graves under the direction of the
designated supervisor.
3.2 Mark out and supervise the erection of headstones.
3.3 Maintain all graves in Newry, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor cemeteries.
3.4 Attend at funerals to liaise with the Undertaker and Clergy and to carry out funeral duties
as directed.
3.5 Responsible for the opening and closing of cemeteries as required by the designated
supervisor.
3.6 Attend at the cemeteries in the evenings and at weekends as required.

Pay rate: £15.91 per hour umbrella

Three to six months contract with view to extend or make permannent
