Job Title: Maintenance Electrician (Repairs Service)

Purpose of the Role

To support the delivery of the organisation’s vision and service objectives by working within the Repairs Team to maintain and improve housing services. The role focuses on delivering high-quality electrical maintenance, repair, testing, and installation work across council properties, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and maintaining excellent customer service standards.

The postholder will carry out electrical works safely, efficiently, and to a recognised professional standard, while contributing to a customer-focused repairs and maintenance service.

Main Responsibilities

Electrical Maintenance & Repairs

  • Carry out electrical repair, maintenance, testing, and installation work in domestic housing properties.
  • Diagnose faults and determine appropriate remedial action, ensuring the most effective and safe repair solution.
  • Complete work in accordance with current IEE Wiring Regulations (18th Edition), Building Regulations, and all relevant legislation.
  • Undertake associated remedial works as required.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all work is carried out safely in line with Health & Safety legislation and organisational procedures.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Assess work areas before starting and report unsafe conditions.
  • Report accidents, hazards, and safeguarding concerns appropriately.
  • Ensure all work meets required quality, compliance, and safety standards.

Customer Service

  • Liaise directly with tenants, introducing yourself, showing identification, and explaining work to be carried out.
  • Provide a professional, respectful, and customer-friendly service at all times.
  • Ensure work areas are left clean, safe, and tidy upon completion.
  • Support tenant engagement, including advice on minor repairs and community-based demonstrations where required.

Service Delivery & Team Support

  • Work collaboratively with Repairs Team Leaders, planners, surveyors, and other trades.
  • Support multi-skilled working across trades where required.
  • Assist colleagues during workload peaks or staff shortages.
  • Contribute to the out-of-hours emergency call-out rota.
  • Provide updates on job progress and report any issues preventing completion.

Administration & Reporting

  • Accurately complete job records, timesheets, vehicle logs, and digital reporting systems (e.g. PDA).
  • Record materials used, follow-on work required, and job completion details.
  • Maintain clear communication with work planners regarding outstanding or incomplete works.

Materials, Equipment & Vehicles

  • Use and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles responsibly in line with procedures.
  • Ensure materials are used appropriately and remain the property of the organisation where applicable.
  • Collect, order, and manage materials in line with approved processes.
  • Use fuel cards and devices responsibly and in line with policy.

General Duties

  • Attend training, toolbox talks, and updates as required.
  • Support continuous service improvement and contribute ideas where appropriate.
  • Provide cover for colleagues when required.
  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and role.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (or equivalent recognised qualification)
  • City & Guilds 2382 – 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • City & Guilds 2391 – Inspection and Testing
  • City & Guilds 2377 – Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification
  • Full understanding of Building Regulations and electrical compliance standards
