HGV Class 2 Driver – Waste Services / Highways

Location: Whitley Depot, Coventry (CV3 4AR)
Salary: £14.82 per hour PAYE / £20.19 per hour Umbrella
Hours: 37 hours per week (rota basis, 4/5 days per week)
Duration: Temporary – 3 months ongoing

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced HGV Class 2 Driver to join Coventry City Council’s Place Directorate, supporting frontline services across Waste Services, Streetpride and Highways.

The successful candidate will be responsible for safely operating Class 2 HGV vehicles, delivering high-quality and customer-focused services across Coventry and the surrounding area. The role will involve vehicle checks, waste and recycling collections, highway support activities, and supervising crew members to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate HGV Class 2 vehicles safely and professionally in line with legislation and council procedures.
  • Complete daily vehicle safety checks, report defects, and ensure vehicles are maintained to a high standard.
  • Carry out waste and recycling collections from residential and commercial locations.
  • Support highways and street cleansing operations, including specialist vehicle duties where required.
  • Supervise and support crew members, ensuring safe working practices and compliance with health and safety procedures.
  • Ensure all allocated routes and tasks are completed within required timescales.
  • Assist with route planning and contribute to improving service efficiency.
  • Communicate professionally with residents, customers, and members of the public, resolving queries where possible.
  • Complete all required documentation, including driver records, vehicle checks, and legal paperwork.
  • Monitor driver hours and tachograph requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure safe loading, unloading, and securing of materials and equipment.
  • Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and any health and safety concerns.
  • Support the induction and coaching of new drivers and crew members.

Essential Requirements

  • Valid HGV Class 2 (Category C) driving licence.
  • Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
  • Experience driving HGV vehicles professionally.
  • Experience working within waste, highways, environmental services, or a similar operational environment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle safety checks, loading requirements, and road transport legislation.
  • Ability to work safely in a customer-facing environment.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to deal professionally with members of the public.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working for a local authority or council environment.
  • Experience driving refuse collection vehicles, sweepers, or specialist HGV vehicles.
  • Experience supervising crews or acting as a senior driver.
  • Knowledge of waste collection, recycling, highways maintenance, or street cleansing services.

Working Pattern

  • 37 hours per week on a rota basis.
  • Working 4 or 5 days per week depending on rota requirements.
  • Typical start times are from 7:00am, with earlier 6:00am starts possible depending on weather conditions.
  • Additional paid overtime of 45 minutes per day for vehicle safety checks.

Additional Information

  • Workers must provide their own safety boots; all other PPE will be provided.
  • Candidates will complete a driving assessment and informal interview before appointment.
  • DVLA checks and pre-employment checks will be completed.
