Information Governance Officer (Temporary)
Reports to: Interim Head of Information Governance (Data Protection Officer)
Purpose of the Role
To provide professional Information Governance (IG) support across the Council, ensuring compliance with Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation. The role will lead and support SAR and FOI casework, undertake quality assurance and peer review, contribute to information risk management activities, and promote high standards of records management and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Information Access & Casework
- Lead or support the processing of Subject Access Requests (SARs) and Freedom of Information (FOI) requests within statutory timescales.
- Undertake complex redaction and apply appropriate exemptions.
- Conduct peer reviews and quality assurance of redaction and disclosure decisions.
- Provide clear advice to services on exemptions, disclosure standards, and IG best practice.
- Information Risk & Compliance
- Review and provide recommendations on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
- Support the logging, assessment, and investigation of minor data breaches, escalating where required.
- Contribute to audits, compliance checks, and risk assessments across the organisation.
- Records Management & Engagement
- Work with service areas to improve records management standards and practices.
- Support the development and delivery of IG training and awareness initiatives.
- Promote adherence to IG policies and procedures across the Council.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate case records and audit trails.
- Identify information risks and recommend proportionate solutions.
- Support the DPO in meeting statutory and corporate governance obligations.
- Manage competing priorities and deliver work within statutory deadlines.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working within Information Governance or Data Protection.
- Strong working knowledge of Data Protection legislation and FOI.
- Experience handling complex SAR/FOI casework and redaction.
- Ability to conduct quality assurance and provide clear advisory guidance.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable:
- Experience reviewing DPIAs and assessing data breaches.
- Experience working within local government or the public sector.
