Insurance Officer
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Insurance Officer to join the Council’s Insurance and Risk Team. The team consists of a Risk and Insurance Manager and four Insurance Officers working across a shared service.
The successful candidate will support the management of the Council’s insurance portfolio and help deliver an effective insurance service to the Council and its partner organisations.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and submit routine insurance claims made by or against the Council to external insurers.
- Manage and process claims across the Council’s insurance portfolio, including third-party claims.
- Negotiate property and liability claims within the Council’s agreed handling arrangements.
- Assist with the investigation of claims, including claims handled internally and those exceeding policy excess levels.
- Liaise with insurers, solicitors, loss adjusters, claimants and internal Council teams.
- Gather and prepare evidence and information required for insurers and courts.
- Respond to correspondence, telephone calls, emails and enquiries relating to insurance matters.
- Prepare relevant reports and returns and maintain accurate claims records.
- Ensure claims and insurance activities comply with relevant legislation, regulations and Council policies.
- Prioritise workload effectively and meet required deadlines and performance standards.
- Use initiative and discretion when dealing with day-to-day claims and operational issues.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Experience in non-life/general insurance, ideally covering a combination of:
- Public liability
- Employers’ liability
- Motor insurance
- Property insurance
- Experience of handling, investigating and progressing insurance claims.
- Strong claims negotiation and settlement experience.
- Good understanding of insurance policy cover and liability.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to liaise confidently with insurers, solicitors, loss adjusters and internal stakeholders.
- Good analytical skills, with the ability to assess information and reach well-reasoned conclusions.
- Good working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work to deadlines.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Desirable
- Part-qualified Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualification or equivalent.
- Previous experience working within a local authority insurance team or similar public-sector environment.
- Experience using JCAD LACHS or a similar claims management system.
Working Arrangements
The role will primarily operate within the Council’s established procedures and policy framework, while requiring the successful candidate to use initiative and discretion when dealing with day-to-day issues.
The post holder may occasionally be required to work from other locations as part of the role.
The role will be responsible for meeting agreed performance standards while ensuring all work is undertaken in line with relevant Council policies, legislation and regulatory requirements.
