Intelligence Analyst

Role Purpose

Provide analytical expertise to support strategic, tactical, and operational policing decisions through the production of intelligence products, threat assessments, and evidential analysis. Identify and assess risks, threats, vulnerabilities, and emerging crime trends to support investigations, resource allocation, and organisational priorities. Deliver actionable intelligence and recommendations to senior leaders, investigators, and operational teams in accordance with the National Intelligence Model (NIM).

Key Responsibilities

Intelligence & Analysis

  • Conduct strategic, tactical, and operational intelligence analysis to identify patterns, trends, risks, vulnerabilities, and criminal networks.
  • Produce NIM-compliant analytical products, including strategic assessments, tactical assessments, target profiles, and problem profiles.
  • Analyse complex intelligence, crime, and investigative data from multiple sources to generate actionable insights.
  • Apply analytical methodologies and risk assessment techniques to support operational decision-making and prioritisation.
  • Develop intelligence collection plans and identify intelligence gaps to guide further information gathering.
  • Conduct horizon scanning and environmental assessments to identify emerging threats and crime trends.

Investigative Support

  • Support major investigations through the analysis of intelligence, communications data, crime reports, and evidential material.
  • Identify key offenders, criminal networks, and investigative opportunities through link, trend, and network analysis.
  • Work closely with investigators to retrieve, interpret, and structure complex information for analytical purposes.
  • Produce evidential charts, intelligence packages, and analytical reports to support investigations and prosecutions.
  • Prepare evidence and provide expert witness testimony in court when required.

Strategic Planning & Risk Assessment

  • Assess organisational priorities using risk assessment methodologies including MoRiLE (Management of Risk in Law Enforcement).
  • Evaluate threat, risk, harm, and vulnerability to support force-wide prioritisation and resource allocation.
  • Provide recommendations to senior officers and decision-makers regarding operational activity, crime reduction strategies, and intelligence-led interventions.
  • Maintain awareness of current crime trends, organised crime threats, and emerging intelligence issues.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Prepare and deliver intelligence briefings, presentations, and reports to senior leadership, investigators, operational teams, and partner agencies.
  • Build effective working relationships across policing departments and external partner organisations.
  • Communicate complex analytical findings clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide specialist intelligence advice to senior officers, intelligence managers, and operational teams.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure all analytical work complies with National Intelligence Model (NIM) standards and College of Policing Authorised Professional Practice (APP).
  • Apply relevant legislation and policies including Data Protection, Human Rights legislation, RIPA, and information handling requirements.
  • Handle and manage sensitive and classified information in accordance with security and information management protocols.
  • Conduct data quality reviews and maintain high standards of integrity, accuracy, and evidential robustness.

Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain awareness of emerging analytical techniques, intelligence methodologies, and industry best practice.
  • Support innovation and the implementation of new analytical tools and processes.
  • Provide guidance and direction on research and analytical activities where appropriate.
