Main Purpose of the Role
To provide a safe, efficient, and professional recycling and waste collection service to residents. The Driver / Team Leader is responsible for driving waste collection vehicles, leading a collection crew, ensuring health and safety standards are followed, and maintaining a high-quality service.
Typical Day
- Carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report any issues.
- Drive refuse and recycling collection vehicles (LGV/RCV) on assigned routes.
- Lead and support a team of loaders to complete collections safely and efficiently.
- Ensure recycling and waste are collected correctly, including food waste, garden waste, residual waste, dry recycling, and trade waste.
- Monitor team performance, PPE compliance, safe working practices, and service standards.
- Communicate with supervisors regarding route issues, hazards, incidents, or service improvements.
- Complete required paperwork and use relevant technology/equipment.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure it is fuelled and ready for use.
Key Skills & Responsibilities
- Lead and support a recycling and waste collection team.
- Work safely and follow all Health & Safety policies, risk assessments, and procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service by acting professionally and courteously with residents.
- Identify and report hazards, accidents, incidents, and near misses.
- Ensure correct recycling procedures are followed and contamination is minimised.
- Support service improvements by providing feedback on routes, workloads, and operational issues.
- Work flexibly when required, including occasional weekends, evenings, bank holidays, and emergency response duties.
- Undertake additional operational duties when required, such as loading, litter collection, or supporting other council services.
- Promote teamwork, fairness, openness, flexibility, and kindness within the workplace.
Essential Qualifications & Requirements
- Clean and current LGV driving licence – Category C.
- Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
- Experience working in a similar driving, waste, recycling, or operational services role.
- Experience leading or supervising a team.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions while on route.
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with colleagues and the public.
- Willingness to undertake relevant training.
- Flexibility to work outside normal hours when required.
Job Overview
Client : Monmouthshire County Council
LOCATION: Abergavenny – which may change in the future if the service location needs to relocate.
WORK PATTERN: Monday to Thursday 7am to 3pm, Friday 7am to 2.30pm, 37 Hours Per Week (including bank holidays)
PAYE Pay Rate : £15.31
