Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of the Interim Fire Safety Surveyor (Tier 2) role is to ensure that buildings comply with fire safety legislation by identifying, assessing, and managing fire risks. The surveyor conducts and reviews Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs), provides expert fire safety advice, monitors remedial works, and helps maintain safe environments for residents, staff, contractors, and visitors. The role also supports the organization in meeting its legal obligations under UK fire safety regulations.
Overview of Typical Day
A typical day involves carrying out Fire Risk Assessments and fire safety inspections across residential and commercial properties. You’ll identify fire risks, record findings, prepare reports, recommend remedial actions, and provide fire safety advice to building managers and contractors. You’ll also review completed works, update compliance records, and help ensure buildings meet current fire safety legislation and standards.
Main Responsibilities
- Conduct Fire Risk Assessments in line with current legislation and recognised standards.
- Review existing FRAs to ensure they are accurate and of high quality.
- Identify fire hazards and evaluate the level of risk.
- Recommend practical and proportionate remedial actions.
- Prioritise fire safety risks and contribute to risk mitigation plans.
- Carry out fire safety inspections and audits across residential, commercial, and mixed-use buildings.
- Monitor fire safety improvement works and verify successful completion.
- Produce clear, accurate, evidence-based reports.
- Maintain compliance records and documentation.
- Advise internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders on fire safety requirements.
- Support regulatory inspections and respond to enforcement actions if required.
- Keep up to date with changes in fire safety legislation, British Standards, and industry best practice.
Experience Required
Fire Safety Experience
- Experience carrying out Fire Risk Assessments in residential, commercial, or public sector buildings.
- Experience inspecting higher-risk residential buildings.
- Experience reviewing Fire Risk Assessments completed by others.
- Experience identifying fire safety defects and recommending corrective actions.
- Experience monitoring fire safety remedial works through to completion.
