Commercial Vehicle Technician

Job Purpose

The Commercial Vehicle Technician will be responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair of the Council’s commercial vehicle fleet. The postholder will ensure that vehicles are safe, reliable, roadworthy and available for operational use, while carrying out all work in accordance with relevant legislation, manufacturer requirements, Council procedures and health and safety standards.

The role requires a skilled and reliable technician who can diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults, complete planned preventative maintenance and respond effectively to urgent vehicle repair requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned servicing, inspections and preventative maintenance on the Council’s commercial vehicle fleet.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment and technical information.
  • Undertake repairs and replacement of vehicle components, systems and associated equipment.
  • Inspect vehicles to ensure they remain safe, roadworthy and compliant with relevant legal and operational requirements.
  • Complete MOT preparation and other statutory or safety-related inspections as required.
  • Respond promptly to vehicle breakdowns, defects and repair requirements.
  • Carry out routine checks and report any defects, safety concerns or additional repair requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of inspections, servicing, repairs, parts used and vehicle defects.
  • Ensure all work is completed to a high professional standard and in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Council procedures.
  • Use workshop tools, equipment and diagnostic systems safely and correctly.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
  • Follow all relevant health and safety, environmental and waste-management procedures.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a professional workshop team and provide support to colleagues when required.
  • Ensure vehicles are returned to operational service within agreed timescales wherever possible.
  • Participate in the Council’s essential rotating shift pattern and provide flexibility to meet operational requirements.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the level and responsibilities of the post.

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant recognised qualification in Commercial Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Motor Vehicle Technology or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in the inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair of commercial vehicles.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Good understanding of vehicle safety, roadworthiness and preventative maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to use vehicle diagnostic equipment, workshop tools and technical information effectively.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team.
  • Good attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality and safety.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Understanding of relevant health and safety requirements within a vehicle workshop environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work an allocated rotating shift pattern.
  • Full UK driving licence appropriate to the vehicles required for the role, where applicable.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience working on local authority, fleet, waste, construction or other specialist commercial vehicles.
  • Experience with diesel engines, vehicle electrical systems and modern vehicle diagnostics.
  • Experience preparing vehicles for MOT or statutory inspections.
  • Relevant HGV/large goods vehicle maintenance experience.
  • Experience working within a fleet workshop or public-sector environment.
  • Additional manufacturer or industry-recognised technical qualifications.

Working Arrangements

The role is based within the Council’s vehicle workshop and involves working as part of a professional fleet maintenance team. Due to the operational nature of the service, the postholder will be required to work an essential rotating shift pattern, including the allocated shifts determined by service requirements.

The role may involve working on a range of commercial vehicles and specialist fleet equipment and may require occasional attendance at vehicle breakdowns or other operational locations.
