Main Purpose of the Role

To play a pivotal, hands-on role within Development Management by leading a dedicated project to eliminate the current planning application backlog. The successful candidate will ensure that workloads are efficiently organised, statutory timescales are met, and key project milestones are achieved while maintaining high standards of decision-making.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Planning Officer to join our Development Management team. The successful candidate will play a key role in a project focused on reducing the planning application backlog and ensuring applications are processed efficiently and within agreed timescales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and progress a caseload of planning applications within Development Management.

  • Organise workloads effectively to meet project milestones, deadlines and statutory timescales.

  • Assess and determine planning applications in accordance with relevant planning policies, legislation and procedures.

  • Provide professional planning advice to applicants, agents, colleagues and other stakeholders.

  • Monitor application progress and identify potential delays or issues.

  • Oversee and support the work of junior planning officers, providing guidance and quality assurance.

  • Contribute to the successful delivery of the backlog reduction project.

  • Prepare planning reports and recommendations for delegated decisions and, where required, planning committees.

  • Liaise with internal departments, consultees and external stakeholders to resolve planning issues.

Essential Experience

  • Strong experience working within Development Management.

  • Proven experience processing and determining planning applications.

  • Good knowledge of UK planning legislation, policy and procedures.

  • Experience managing a busy caseload and working to tight deadlines.

  • Experience of supporting, mentoring or overseeing junior planning officers.

  • Strong organisational, analytical and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and deliver against project targets.
