Work pattern: 2 days remote, 3 days in the office

PAYE Pay Rate: £220.05 per day

Main Purpose of the Role

To support the Trading Standards Service Manager in delivering an effective and legally compliant service, providing technical guidance to officers and leading complex enforcement cases.

The role will protect residents, businesses and visitors in Barnet and act as Chief Weights and Measures Inspector, ensuring the Council meets its statutory duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Service Manager with the day-to-day delivery of Trading Standards.

  • Monitor workloads and provide advice and guidance to officers.

  • Lead complex, high-risk and priority investigations.

  • Manage an individual caseload and undertake enforcement action.

  • Provide technical advice on Trading Standards legislation and enforcement.

  • Prepare cases for prosecution and other formal enforcement action.

  • Work with businesses to promote legal compliance.

  • Work with police, legal services and other partner agencies.

  • Develop guidance, procedures and training resources.

  • Act as Chief Weights and Measures Inspector and oversee related statutory duties.

  • Ensure enforcement decisions are proportionate, consistent and legally robust.

Typical Day

  • Review and priorities cases and officer workloads.

  • Provide advice on complex investigations.

  • Undertake inspections and enforcement activity.

  • Progress own complex caseload.

  • Review evidence and prepare enforcement/prosecution files.

  • Liaise with businesses, legal services and partner agencies.

  • Support and mentor Trading Standards Officers.

  • Deal with weights and measures matters where required.

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant Trading Standards qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Significant experience in Trading Standards or regulatory enforcement.

  • Experience leading complex investigations.

  • Knowledge of enforcement powers and relevant legislation.

  • Experience preparing cases for prosecution or formal enforcement.

  • Appropriate knowledge and experience of weights and measures.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Willingness to undertake fieldwork, inspections and enforcement activities.
