Painter & Decorator – Durham County Council
Location: County Durham – travel across council properties as required

About the Role
Durham County Council is looking for an experienced Painter & Decorator to join the Strategic Facilities Management, Repairs & Maintenance Team.
The successful candidate will carry out a range of painting, decorating and associated maintenance works across Durham County Council buildings, assets and other external client properties. You will work to drawings, specifications and client requirements, ensuring all work is completed to a high standard, safely and within agreed timescales.
This is a practical, hands-on role requiring someone who can work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider maintenance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out painting and decorating works to drawings, specifications and instructions.
- Complete both new installation and maintenance works.
- Carry out general maintenance tasks as instructed.
- Identify and remedy decoration problems and repairs within commercial premises.
- Work across council buildings and other client properties throughout County Durham.
- Work safely and comply with all relevant Health & Safety legislation and statutory requirements.
- Maintain and correctly use required PPE.
- Plan and organise your workload to meet deadlines.
- Record completed works for business and financial purposes.
- Communicate professionally with customers, colleagues and managers.
- Promote the services provided by the Repairs & Maintenance Team.
- Undertake relevant training and work towards developing multi-skilled capabilities.
Essential Requirements
- City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Painting & Decorating.
- Minimum 2 years’ post-qualification experience in painting and decorating.
- Proven ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Experience dealing with customers/clients.
- Ability to complete projects and works within agreed timescales.
- Good knowledge of Health & Safety within building and decorating works.
- Ability to follow drawings, specifications and instructions.
- Good communication, organisational and numerical skills.
- Ability to plan and organise work effectively.
- Flexible, reliable and self-motivated approach.
- Commitment to delivering a high standard of customer service.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience working in commercial and domestic environments.
- Experience working on maintenance and contractual projects.
- Experience within industrial or commercial buildings.
- Previous local authority, public sector or facilities management experience.
- Trade apprenticeship.
- Health & Safety training.
- Knowledge of relevant quality systems and IT applications.
Additional Requirements
- A valid driving licence for the required category of council vehicle is essential.
- Candidates will be required to successfully complete an in-house Driver Induction Assessment.
- The role is subject to an Enhanced DBS disclosure.
- The position is not eligible for flexitime.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a qualified and experienced Painter & Decorator with at least two years’ post-qualification experience. They should be confident working independently across multiple properties, have strong commercial/maintenance painting experience, understand Health & Safety requirements and be able to deliver high-quality work while providing excellent customer service.
