Job Title: Legal Officer – Children’s Services (Paralegal, Childcare Law)
Job Purpose
To provide high-quality legal support to the Local Authority in public law childcare proceedings, ensuring timely preparation, management, and filing of court documents. The role supports solicitors representing the council in child protection and care proceedings under the Children Act 1989.
Key Responsibilities
- Case Preparation & Documentation
- Assist solicitors in preparing care and supervision applications.
- Draft and collate court documents, including statements, chronologies, and case summaries.
- Compile and organise evidence from social workers, police, medical professionals, schools, and other relevant agencies.
- Prepare accurate court bundles in line with statutory deadlines.
- Liaison & Client Support
- Act as a point of contact between the legal team and social workers, managers, and external professionals.
- Request and follow up on statements, reports, and assessments.
- Ensure timely communication of updates to solicitors and relevant stakeholders.
- Court & Procedural Support
- File documents with the Family Court and track directions, deadlines, and hearings.
- Prepare briefs and bundles for Counsel (barristers).
- Attend hearings to assist solicitors with case management as required.
- Administrative & Legal Aid Duties
- Maintain case management systems and accurate legal records.
- Prepare schedules of costs and ensure compliance with procedural rules.
- Support legal team with Legal Aid documentation and submissions.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
- Previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or caseworker in family or childcare law, preferably within a Local Authority.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple cases with tight deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence liaising with professionals in child protection, social care, and court settings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal case management systems.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of care proceedings and public law under the Children Act 1989.
- Experience preparing documents for Family Court hearings.
- Understanding of child protection processes and statutory thresholds.
