Location: London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham
Team: Travel Care Team
Hours: Approximately 27.5 hours per week
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, split shifts
Typical Hours: 7:00am–9:30am and 2:30pm–5:30pm

Role Overview

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham is looking for a reliable and caring Passenger Escort / Passenger Assistant to support vulnerable children, young people and adults travelling to and from schools, colleges and day services.

The successful candidate will travel with passengers who may have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan, disabilities or other additional support needs, ensuring they remain safe and supported throughout their journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Escort passengers safely between their home and school, college or day service.
  • Assist passengers when boarding and leaving the vehicle.
  • Provide reassurance and appropriate support throughout each journey.
  • Monitor passengers’ wellbeing and respond appropriately to distress or challenging behaviour.
  • Support passengers with communication, mobility, learning or behavioural difficulties.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety and passenger transport procedures.
  • Report safeguarding concerns or incidents to the appropriate council contact.
  • Work with parents/carers, schools, day services, drivers and council staff.
  • Ensure passengers are safely handed over to the appropriate person at the end of each journey.
  • Complete any required journey or incident records.

Requirements

  • Previous experience supporting children, young people or adults with SEND/disabilities is desirable.
  • Experience in passenger assistance, care, support work, SEN, education or community services would be beneficial.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding and passenger safety.
  • Patient, caring and able to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable and punctual, with the ability to commit to regular morning and afternoon journeys.
  • Able to follow instructions, procedures and safeguarding requirements.

Working Pattern

The role operates around school and day-service transport schedules and involves split shifts:

Morning: 7:00am–9:30am
Afternoon: 2:30pm–5:30pm

This equates to approximately 5.5 hours per day / 27.5 hours per week, based on Monday–Friday working.
