About the Role

Carmarthenshire Council is looking for an experienced Refuse/Recycling Driver to support the delivery of a safe, reliable and efficient waste and recycling collection service across the area.

You will be responsible for driving an allocated refuse/recycling collection vehicle and supervising a crew of up to three Refuse/Recycling Loaders. You will ensure collection rounds are completed safely, efficiently and in line with Council procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely drive and operate an allocated refuse/recycling collection vehicle.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks and report any defects to the relevant supervisor.
  • Undertake routine vehicle cleaning and maintenance in line with procedures and training.
  • Ensure all road safety and Health & Safety requirements are followed.
  • Supervise, direct and provide guidance to up to three refuse/recycling loaders.
  • Oversee the collection round and resolve operational issues such as parked vehicles, obstructions, communal collection points and illicit tipping.
  • Assist the crew with loading refuse and recycling containers when required.
  • Navigate allocated routes using maps and in-cab technology.
  • Correctly use in-cab data systems and tachograph functions for route management and recording information.
  • Follow all procedures when unloading and weighing waste at transfer stations, landfill sites and recycling facilities.
  • Use initiative to resolve operational problems, including contamination and unusual collection requirements.
  • Engage politely with members of the public and provide guidance and advice on recycling.
  • Support other crews where required to ensure collection rounds are completed safely and on time.
  • Contribute to improving the efficiency and design of designated collection routes.
  • Complete relevant paperwork and maintain accurate records, including timesheets, work schedules and accident reports.
  • Wear all required PPE and ensure appropriate safety equipment is used by the crew.
  • Maintain good working relationships with colleagues, supervisors and managers.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum Category C HGV/LGV licence.
  • Experience operating power mechanisms, plant or machinery.
  • Ability to identify and report vehicle defects.
  • Ability to undertake sustained physical work.
  • Ability to accurately record information and complete paperwork.
  • Ability to use initiative to resolve operational issues.
  • Ability to read and follow maps.
  • Ability to use in-cab technology.
  • Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation.
  • Ability to lead and supervise a small team.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and daily work patterns.
  • Flexible approach to work and commitment to high service standards.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Willingness to comply with PPE and ongoing job-related training requirements.

Desirable

  • Geographical knowledge of Carmarthenshire.
  • Experience providing instruction and guidance to individuals or a team.
  • Awareness of relevant Council policies, procedures and customer care requirements.

Working Environment

This is a hands-on, outdoor role within the Council’s waste and recycling service. The successful candidate must be comfortable undertaking physical work, assisting with refuse/recycling collections and working in varying weather conditions.
