Job Title: Rehabilitation Officer – Visual Impairment (ROVI)
Department: Adult Social Care / Sensory Service
Role Purpose
The Rehabilitation Officer for Visual Impairment (ROVI) provides specialist rehabilitation support to individuals with visual impairment, enabling them to develop skills for independent living and improve their quality of life. The role involves assessing needs, delivering mobility and daily living training, and working collaboratively with professionals and community organisations to ensure accessible and person-centred support.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments for individuals with visual impairment to identify rehabilitation and support needs.
- Develop and deliver personalised rehabilitation programmes to promote independence in daily living and mobility.
- Provide training in orientation and mobility, sighted guide techniques, and safety strategies.
- Support service users to develop practical skills related to personal care, domestic tasks, and community access.
- Assess the need for and arrange appropriate specialist equipment and assistive aids.
- Provide advice on creating accessible environments in homes, public buildings, and community settings.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, healthcare professionals, and voluntary organisations.
- Liaise with external organisations such as low vision services and guide dog training centres where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate case records and documentation in line with departmental policies and IT systems.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with relevant legislation including the Care Act, Safeguarding procedures, and the Mental Capacity Act.
Requirements
- Relevant qualification such as Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) in Rehabilitation Studies, Foundation Degree in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment), or equivalent.
- Experience supporting individuals with visual impairment and delivering mobility and orientation training.
- Knowledge of rehabilitation techniques, assistive technology, and equipment for visually impaired individuals.
- Understanding of safeguarding, the Care Act, and person-centred approaches to support.
