Purpose
- To drive up to 35 seat passenger carrying vehicles and other Council vehicles on scheduled and non-scheduled services for all aspects of activity undertaken by Council buses, minibuses, goods vehicles and cars as directed, for the transport of passengers and/or commodities in a safe and efficient manner. 2. To act as a passenger assistant when instructed by an appropriate Line Manager.
- To accept individual responsibility for delivering the service standards as set out in the service’s ‘Staff Handbook for Passenger Drivers’ as amended from time to time and any other guidance or instruction provided.
Core job description / Main duties and responsibilities
2.1 To safely and efficiently drive any allocated vehicle in accordance with a journey schedule or other verbal or written instruction, showing respect for other road users, passengers, and the general public at all times.
2.2 To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, when instructed by a manager, which are within the capabilities of the postholder and commensurate with the grade of the post.
- To access the day’s work schedules without direct supervision, if necessary, check for any updates and changes and ensure the vehicle is equipped to undertake the required journey.
2.4 To be responsible for the well being of passengers and users whilst in the care of the Service. To report as soon as possible to an appropriate manager any concerns about the well-being of passengers and users.
2.5 To be punctual at collections and arrive punctually at destinations. To report any delay to managers to ensure passengers and users are aware of any delay.
2.6 To undertake all required checks to assess vehicle safety and legality prior to commencing a journey and ensure that vehicle condition checks are undertaken at the end of every journey, reporting any defects/damage as soon as possible to the appropriate manager.
- To ensure compliance with Driver’s Hours and Records Regulations, Working Time Directives and any other legal requirements of vocational drivers and the type of journey undertaken.
2.8 To maintain the external cleanliness of the allocated vehicle to a high standard in order to protect the image of the Council. To ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of the interior of the vehicle is of a high standard. To ensure all windows are kept clean and smear-free inside and outside.
2.9 To ensure that all appropriate and relevant equipment that is required for the journey is on the vehicle and is in good condition.
2.10 To ensure that appropriate records/registers are maintained for passengers and users travelling on the vehicle. To be responsible for conveyance of messages or the safe keeping of envelopes passing between the passenger’s carers and the school/centre and vice-versa. To ensure any medication/equipment transported with the passenger is carried safety and legally.
2.11 To operate, after appropriate training, digital tachographs, analogue tachographs, any on-board communication equipment, any other I.T. equipment, radio/other entertainment systems, electronic driver identification, vehicle tracking or navigation equipment fitted to the vehicle and check that it is working prior to any journey.
2.12 To operate, after appropriate training, tail-lifts and any other equipment fitted to or carried on the vehicle, to ensure safe and easy loading of passengers.
2.13 When undertaking passenger assistant duties, ensure that customers in wheelchairs and special seats are adequately secured within the vehicle and all safety belts are properly adjusted and fitted.
2.14 To be responsible for the safe delivery of customers to identified destinations making sure that any customer is delivered safely and with dignity. Where appropriate, ensure a parent or guardian who is recognised or authorised by the Council receives the customer. In the event of arrangements failing ensure the service user is transported safely to the place nominated by the service.
2.15 To assist passengers, if necessary, to board and disembark the vehicle safely and assist with any light luggage or possessions.
2.16 To notify a manager as soon as possible of any adverse event (delays, accidents, incidents, abuse etc.) and complete all appropriate paperwork as soon as possible upon return to the depot.
2.17 To attend any training/refresher courses as required by managers.
2.18 To wear the uniform provided, keeping it clean and smart, and wear photographic ID.
2.19 To read and understand the current Passenger Staff Handbook or any revisions/amendments.
2.20 To participate in the Council’s Performance and Development Scheme in the achievement of agreed targets ensuring these are met within the specified time scale.
2.21 To promote and comply with the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy in the opposition and eradication of all forms of discrimination and to ensure all services are accessible to all users.
Experience
- Experience of driving minibuses, accessible vehicles and coaches within an inner city area.
- Experience of dealing with people in a caring, sympathetic and responsible manner.
- Experience of working with adults or children who need assistance with mobility, personal care and behavioural issues.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of care to be provided to individuals with special needs.
- Knowledge and use of a language other than English.
- Knowledge of the geography of the Borough, the London and South East area.Circumstances Particular to the Job
- To hold a Driving Licence (Category D) allowing the driver to drive passenger carrying vehicles, including the driver.
- Holder of the Driver CPC.
- Ability to work on own initiative and/or as part of a team.
- Ability to complete and maintain transport documentation/registers
- To be physically fit and able to bend, push and pull
- To be able to work the varied hours required of the service
- To be able to commute easily from home to attend appropriate locations within the Borough at times required of the service
- To wear an appropriate uniform provided by the service and to keep it clean and tidy
- To have a valid positive CRB (Enhanced) Check.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
- Good inter-personal skills with a diverse range of customers, clients, colleagues and service partners with bi-lingual ability an advantage.
- Ability to communicate with all individuals through use of personality.
- Ability to present a professional image of the Council and its transport operations.
- A satisfactory attendance (normally less than 5 days absence in a year) but taking into account individual circumstances.
