The Interim Accountant is responsible for ensuring the Authority’s finances are well managed, compliant, and accurately reported. The role supports strong financial control by overseeing balance sheet reconciliations, treasury management, statutory reporting, grants, and financial systems.
A typical day includes reviewing financial records, managing cashflow and treasury activities, preparing statutory returns, supporting audits, improving financial processes, and working with colleagues to provide accurate financial information. The post holder will also line manage the Accounts Assistant and help ensure the finance team delivers an effective and efficient service.

The role leads on technical accounting, treasury management, balance sheet control, and statutory reporting while ensuring robust financial governance, supporting informed decision-making, and maintaining compliance with CIPFA standards and regulatory requirements. The post also drives continuous improvement in financial processes and provides leadership to the Accounts Assistant. | Ensure all balance sheet reconciliations are accurate, complete, and audit-ready, maintaining strong financial controls across the organisation. | ||||||
| Administer the Xero finance system, improve financial processes, strengthen internal controls, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. | ||||||
| Manage reserves and funding sources, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting, while overseeing income recognition and grant accounting to support financial transparency and planning. | ||||||
| Oversee organisational cashflow, banking, investments, and treasury activities to maintain liquidity, ensure compliance, and provide insightful treasury reports to senior management and committees. | ||||||
| Ensure compliance with CIPFA standards, oversee preparation of high-quality financial statements, VAT returns, government submissions, and other statutory reporting requirements. |
