Main Purpose of the Role

To develop, implement and maintain an operational training and competency programmed for Waste Services and the wider operational workforce. The role ensures employees are trained, assessed and competent to carry out their duties safely, legally and in accordance with Council policies, Health & Safety legislation and operational best practice.

Typical Day Overview

A typical day involves delivering inductions and practical training, carrying out driver and operational competency assessments, monitoring compliance records, providing coaching and refresher training, supporting managers with training needs, and working closely with operational teams to improve safety, compliance and workforce capability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver operational training programmed and competency frameworks for operational employees.
  • Deliver inductions for permanent, temporary and agency staff, ensuring they are competent before commencing operational duties.
  • Conduct practical driver assessments, vehicle familiarization, license checks and driver refresher training.
  • Carry out competency assessments for drivers, loaders, street cleansing operatives and other frontline employees.
  • Train employees in manual handling, safe systems of work, vehicle safety, equipment use and operational procedures.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, refresher training and targeted coaching following incidents, audits or legislative changes.
  • Maintain accurate training records, competency assessments and training matrices.
  • Monitor tachograph compliance, provide driver coaching and support improvements in operational performance.
  • Promote compliance with DVSA guidance, operator license requirements and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Support managers in identifying training needs arising from incidents, audits and performance concerns.
  • Build effective working relationships with operational managers, Transport and Health & Safety teams to improve workforce competence and reduce operational risk.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, coaching and organizational skills while delivering practical training and promoting a positive safety culture.

Essential Qualification

  • Full UK Driving License.

PAYE Pay Rate – £251.11 per day
