Service Area: Historic Environment Team – Place Shaping, Shropshire Council

PAYE Pay Rate: £198.19 per day

About the Role

The Conservation Officer will support Shropshire Council’s Historic Environment Team with work relating to historic buildings, conservation areas and heritage sites.

The main purpose of the role is to assess planning and listed building applications and provide advice on whether proposed changes could affect historic or protected buildings and areas.

Main Duties

  • Assess planning applications and listed building consent applications.
  • Provide advice about changes affecting listed buildings and conservation areas.
  • Review proposals involving historic buildings, parks, gardens and other heritage assets.
  • Respond to pre-application enquiries and provide advice to applicants and planning colleagues.
  • Carry out site visits when required.
  • Write reports, consultation responses and recommendations.
  • Help with conservation area work and heritage projects.
  • Monitor Buildings at Risk and help resolve issues.
  • Work with Historic England, councils, applicants and other organisations.
  • Attend meetings and represent the Historic Environment Team.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in:
    • Building Conservation
    • Historic Environment
    • Planning
    • Architecture
    • or a related subject.
  • Previous experience as a Conservation Officer or in a similar heritage role.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990
    • National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF)
    • Historic England guidance
  • Experience assessing proposals affecting heritage assets.
  • Good report-writing and communication skills.
  • Full UK driving License and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

  • Membership of IHBC, RTPI, RIBA or another relevant professional body.
  • Experience working for a Local Planning Authority.
  • Experience preparing Conservation Area Appraisals or Management Plans.
  • Experience with heritage enforcement and Buildings at Risk.
