Work Pattern: 37 hours per week, working hours between 07:00–19:00, Minimum 4 days per week working from a Cambridgeshire depot/office
PAYE Pay Rate: £200 per day
Role Purpose
To oversee and manage highway maintenance works, ensuring Cambridgeshire’s highway network is maintained safely and effectively. The role covers reactive, preventative and cyclical maintenance across roads, footways, cycle routes and public rights of way.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine highway inspections and identify defects requiring repair.
- Investigate reported highway faults and undertake site inspections.
- Respond to incidents including flooding, collisions, vehicle fires and oil spills.
- Coordinate emergency and reactive maintenance works.
- Order and manage highway maintenance works with contractors.
- Scope works, assess costs and monitor works through to completion.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance programmes to minimise disruption.
- Prioritise urgent works and ensure value for money.
- Liaise with residents, Parish/Town Councils and community groups.
- Keep customers and communities informed about highway works.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure statutory requirements are met.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors.
Typical Day
A typical day will involve highway inspections, investigating reported defects, coordinating reactive repairs and responding to incidents across the network. You will liaise with contractors, residents and local stakeholders, arrange maintenance works, monitor progress and ensure urgent issues are dealt with safely and efficiently.
Essential Requirements
- 5+ years’ experience in Highways & Transport or a similar role.
- Experience in reactive highway maintenance and emergency response.
- Experience inspecting highway defects and coordinating repairs.
- Qualified Highway Safety Inspector with a current certificate/qualification.
- HND or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Highways or Construction.
- Knowledge of highway construction, maintenance and drainage.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including Highways Act 1980 and New Roads & Street Works Act 1991.
- Experience working with contractors and managing maintenance works.
- Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work autonomously.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams and email.
- Full driving licence and ability to attend highway sites.
- Willingness to occasionally work outside standard office hours.
