Senior Lawyer

Job Details

Southwark council are looking for a technical expert who will work closely with the Council’s Regeneration and Planning officers; this lawyer will have the opportunity to negotiate on some major planning agreements and advise in respect of landmark regeneration schemes (which have in the past few years included six CPO inquiries), infrastructure projects, and planning policy. There will also be work in relation to planning inquiry appeals, legal challenges and you may be required to advise one of the Council’s planning committees.

 

To provide legal expertise on highly complex issues for the council, ensuring that
services are commercially focused business driven and comply with the Council’s
statutory and contractual obligations.
2. To participate in determining and setting the direction for the department in business
and financial planning, ensuring that the service is responsive to the changing
environment and the best use is made of available resources.
3. To be responsible for the provision of expertise at Committee and other decision
making bodies, responding to complex legal arguments on behalf of Members, Chief
Officers, project boards and departments as to the law on matters relating to the area
of specialism.
4. To work collaboratively with the head of team to ensure a consistent and holistic
approach to the delivery of services.
5. Develop effective partnerships with Government Departments, Council departments,
other teams within Legal Services, external agencies, Courts, external Solicitors,
Barristers, KC’s and contractors and developers, to co-ordinate services and
collaborate on projects and ensure a multi-disciplinary approach.
6. Establish good governance and implement new methods, forms and procedures in
accordance with requirements of the DPA, FOI and Local Government Law generally.
7. To keep up to date with changes in Legislation, guidance and policy and be able to
assess the implication of these changes on the council.
8. Undertake research to respond on legal issues and contractual disputes arising
including, where necessary, providing advocacy, briefing Counsel and/or consultants
and instructing experts.
