Senior Traffic Engineer

Job Summary

Responsible for delivering traffic and transportation engineering projects on behalf of the Council, ensuring schemes are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with relevant legislation and engineering standards. The role involves managing projects from design through to construction, overseeing contractors, providing technical advice, supervising junior staff, and engaging with stakeholders to deliver effective highway and traffic management solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the delivery of traffic and highway engineering projects from initial concept through to completion.
• Design and develop traffic management, road safety, parking, pedestrian, cycling, and highway improvement schemes.
• Analyse traffic surveys, collision data, and technical reports to identify engineering solutions.
• Prepare technical specifications, contract documents, bills of quantities, and tender documentation.
• Monitor project budgets, prepare cost estimates, track expenditure, and certify contractor payments.
• Manage contractors and consultants, carrying out site inspections to ensure work complies with specifications, quality standards, and health and safety requirements.
• Produce technical reports, drawings, and project documentation for senior management, elected members, and stakeholders.
• Respond to enquiries and complaints from residents and stakeholders, attending public meetings and consultations where required.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, engineering standards, Council policies, and statutory requirements.
• Supervise and mentor junior engineers and technical staff, providing guidance and supporting their professional development.
• Provide professional engineering advice to internal departments and external organisations.

Key Skills & Experience

• Strong knowledge of traffic engineering, highway design, road safety, and traffic management principles.
• Experience managing engineering projects, budgets, contractors, and multiple workstreams.
• Ability to interpret traffic surveys, technical data, and engineering reports to develop practical solutions.
• Experience preparing technical reports, specifications, and tender documentation.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience engaging with residents, contractors, and senior stakeholders.
• Knowledge of relevant UK highway legislation, standards, and health and safety requirements.
• Proficient in engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, GIS, and Microsoft Office.
