Job Description: Server & Cloud Engineer

Job Purpose
The Server & Cloud Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and ongoing support of the organisation’s server, storage, and hybrid cloud infrastructure.
The role ensures high availability, security, and performance of critical IT systems in line with national policing standards, policies, and cybersecurity requirements.
Working within a 3rd line infrastructure team, the post holder will provide advanced technical support, contribute to infrastructure improvements, and support secure cloud and on-premise environments.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Support & Administration
- Provide 3rd line support for complex IT incidents, problems, and service requests
- Manage and maintain server, storage, and virtualisation environments
- Ensure high availability and performance of IT systems across the organisation
- Support hybrid infrastructure including on-premise and cloud platforms
Cloud & Virtualisation
- Administer and support Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments
- Manage virtualisation platforms such as VMware and VxRail
- Support migration, deployment, and optimisation of cloud workloads
Security & Compliance
- Ensure systems comply with organisational and national security standards
- Implement patching, firmware updates, and system hardening
- Support remediation actions following IT health checks and security audits
- Maintain secure access controls using Active Directory and related services
Monitoring & Performance Management
- Use monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds) to maintain system availability
- Proactively identify performance issues and potential service risks
- Analyse trends to improve system reliability and service delivery
Technical Design & Improvement
- Contribute to infrastructure design, architecture, and solution development
- Support product selection and implementation for new technologies
- Maintain technical documentation and system records
Stakeholder & Team Collaboration
- Work closely with network, security, and information management teams
- Communicate technical issues and solutions to users at all levels
- Build strong working relationships across IT and business functions
Additional Duties
- Participate in an out-of-hours on-call support rota
- Stay current with emerging infrastructure and cloud technologies
- Undertake additional duties as required within the scope of the role
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Experience supporting VMware or similar virtualisation platforms
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 administration
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server environments
- Understanding of Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP
- Ability to work independently and as part of a technical team
- Willingness to participate in out-of-hours support
- Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance
Desirable Requirements
- Experience working within an ITIL environment
- Knowledge of network infrastructure (TCP/IP, LAN/WAN)
- Experience in a 3rd line infrastructure support role
- Relevant Microsoft or cloud certifications (e.g., Azure, MCSA, MCSE)
- Degree or equivalent qualification in a computing discipline
