About the Role

We are looking for a creative and proactive Social Media Officer to join the Communications Team supporting both Rochford District Council and Brentwood Borough Council.

You will be responsible for creating engaging digital content, managing social media channels and supporting communications campaigns across both organisations. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong content creation, photography, video editing and social media management skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create engaging written, visual and multimedia content for social media, newsletters and the intranet.
  • Produce photography and video content using cameras and smartphones, including filming and editing.
  • Create graphics and other multimedia assets using tools such as Canva.
  • Schedule, publish and monitor social media content across the councils’ platforms.
  • Respond to members of the public in a timely, friendly and appropriate manner.
  • Monitor social media and media coverage and report relevant developments.
  • Monitor social media performance, customer insight and campaign data.
  • Identify emerging social media trends and recommend new approaches.
  • Support the Communications Team by turning campaigns and complex information into clear, engaging social media content.
  • Deputise for other communications roles when required.

About You

You will have:

  • Experience creating social media videos, images and written content.
  • Strong video and image editing skills.
  • Experience taking an idea from concept through to finished content, including camera, lighting, sound and editing.
  • Experience managing social media channels and scheduling content.
  • Experience analysing social media activity, trends and campaign performance.
  • The ability to translate complex information into simple and engaging content.
  • Strong proofreading and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Experience using Canva or similar design tools.
  • A background in communications, journalism, digital media or relevant professional experience.
  • An understanding of communications within a local government or public-sector environment is desirable.
  • A full, valid driving licence.

Additional Requirements

The role covers both Rochford District Council and Brentwood Borough Council, so you must be able to travel between both locations as required.

You may also occasionally be required to work outside normal office hours to attend meetings, events or support emergency situations.
