Job Title: Environmental Health Technician – Noise & Nuisance
Location: London Borough of Wandsworth (with some work in Richmond)
Hours: 35 hours per week | 7-week shift pattern including evenings and weekends
Driving: Full UK driving licence required (council vehicle provided)
Job Overview
We are looking for an Environmental Health Technician to join the Noise and Nuisance team, supporting the investigation of environmental complaints across the borough. The role involves responding to reports from residents, carrying out site visits, gathering evidence, and preparing reports to support enforcement action where necessary.
You will play an important role in helping the council protect residents from statutory nuisances and ensuring local environmental regulations are followed.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate noise complaints and environmental nuisance issues including loud music, parties, bonfires and accumulations of rubbish.
- Conduct site visits and out-of-hours investigations to assess reported issues.
- Gather evidence through monitoring, observations, statements and documentation.
- Prepare reports and case files to support senior officers in deciding enforcement action.
- Serve statutory notices and assist with enforcement activities where required.
- Maintain accurate records of investigations and casework.
- Provide advice to residents and businesses regarding noise and nuisance regulations.
- Support senior Environmental Health officers with complex investigations and projects.
Working Pattern
The role operates a 7-week shift pattern which includes daytime and out-of-hours work to respond to noise complaints.
Typical service hours include:
- Weekday office hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm
- Out-of-hours service:
- Thursday: 7pm – 2am
- Friday: 8pm – 3am
- Saturday: 1pm – 3am
- Sunday: 9am – 4pm and 7pm – 2am
Officers work with a colleague during out-of-hours shifts.
Requirements
- Experience in environmental enforcement, regulatory services, or environmental health.
- Knowledge of noise and nuisance legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Act).
- Ability to conduct investigations and gather evidence.
- Strong communication and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Full UK driving licence required.
