Role Purpose

To carry out gas, heating, and plumbing repairs, maintenance, installations, and minor works across council housing, empty properties, schools, and public buildings. The role involves delivering high-quality services safely, efficiently, and in compliance with current regulations while providing excellent customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out gas, heating, and plumbing repairs, servicing, maintenance, and installation works using a multi-skilled, whole-job approach.
  • Complete planned maintenance, replacement programmes, capital projects, and responsive repairs.
  • Undertake first-fix and second-fix heating and plumbing installations.
  • Diagnose faults and determine appropriate repair solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Work within occupied and empty domestic properties, schools, and public buildings.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Measure and mark out work areas accurately.
  • Plan and prioritise daily workloads to ensure jobs are completed safely, efficiently, and within agreed timescales.
  • Assess material and equipment requirements and order supplies as necessary.
  • Operate portable power tools, testing equipment, and associated plant safely and effectively.
  • Conduct risk assessments and comply with COSHH requirements.
  • Ensure all work complies with current gas safety regulations, health and safety legislation, and company policies.
  • Maintain safe working environments for colleagues, customers, and members of the public.
  • Use handheld devices and computer systems to record work activities and update job information.
  • Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with residents, building users, and stakeholders.
  • Supervise and support apprentices, trainees, and work experience placements, ensuring safe working practices and high standards of workmanship.
  • Respond to emergency situations when required.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver work to a high standard, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and industry best practices.
  • Take responsibility for organising and completing work with minimal day-to-day supervision.
  • Ensure jobs are completed within agreed timescales and to customer satisfaction.
  • Identify and resolve routine site issues independently, escalating only significant or unforeseen problems.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements.
  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.

Essential Qualifications and Training

  • NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing or equivalent Advanced Craft Certificate.
  • Recognised time-served apprenticeship in Plumbing.
  • Current ACS Gas qualifications, including CCN1 and relevant appliance modules.
  • Manual Handling certification.
  • Working at Height certification.
  • Relevant Health and Safety training.
  • Asbestos Awareness certification.
  • Full, current UK driving licence.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Non-Domestic Gas qualifications.
  • Abrasive Wheels certification.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Proven experience in gas, heating, and plumbing installation, servicing, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Experience working in occupied and empty domestic properties.
  • Experience working within schools and public buildings.
  • Knowledge of first-fix and second-fix heating installations.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and working in accordance with COSHH regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and plans.
  • Competence in using portable power tools, testing equipment, and cable detection devices.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems without direct supervision.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience supervising apprentices or trainees.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent travel between sites using a company vehicle.
  • Regular work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Regular work at height.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, and occasionally unpleasant environments.
  • Manual handling and lifting of equipment and materials.
  • Work within occupied homes, empty properties, schools, and public buildings.
  • Occasional participation in emergency response activities.

Safeguarding

The post holder is required to support safeguarding arrangements for children, young people, and vulnerable adults. Appointment to this role is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
