| Job Purpose |
| To purchase prepare, cook and serve meals, ensuring that all meals are balanced and take account of all ethnic, religious and dietary needs of clients and staff. To provide additional catering when required. |

Work Environment |
| The jobholder needs to be aware of the different dietary needs of clients and staff and how these needs may change. Deadlines are driven by the need not to waste food. This is the responsibility of the post-holder. There is also a need to ensure that regular inspections are carried out / cleaning takes place to ensure that a hygienic environment is maintained and that working practices and conditions comply with Health and Safety standards.
Further flexibility is required in addressing ad hoc needs. The kitchen is a busy environment to work in. It can be noisy and hot. It can also involve exposure to hazardous cleaning materials, throughout the working day. There is a need to be physically fit to carry out duties of the post (e.g. standing up throughout the working day, bending and carrying heavy pots and trays. Potential hazards involve risk of burns, muscular / skeletal injuries and exposure to hazardous cleaning materials on a daily basis. |
Work Dimensions |
| The job involves innovative thinking on a weekly basis to ensure that menus are varied whilst complying with dietary needs and keep within the catering budget.
The jobholder is responsible for supervising the Kitchen Assistant and ensuring that a healthy and safe working environment is maintained. The jobholder is responsible to the Head of Centre (or, his / her representative) who agrees menus on a weekly basis, and who is responsible for the management and development of the post holder. |
